Capt. J. Moloney
In 2001 I joined my first ship as a deck apprentice. I grew up in a small boat yard on the shores of Lough Swilly and always wanted a career working at sea. I attended CIT for a 2 month course on seamanship before going to sea to learn my trade.
Over the next two years I worked and studied on various different Arklow ships, putting into practice what I had been shown in college and gaining invaluable experience from professional and experienced mariners.
The company and the officers I sailed with taught and encouraged me from the very beginning of my career the importance of professionalism and dedication to detail which has served me well to this day.
When I had enough seatime it was time to go back to college and in 2005 I became an officer on the arklow Venus. Within a year I was promoted to chief officer and sailed as chief officer for a further five years. In 2008 I returned to NMCI in Cork and qualified as master in 2009.
Upon my return to sea I was immediately promoted to master and took command of the Arklow Rebel.
In my opinion I do not see my work as a job but more of a vocation. The shipping industry is an extremely demanding and professional environment but it is also highly rewarding and exciting place to be.

Capt. J. Conlon
After finishing my leaving cert in 2003 I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do.
I was heavily involved in sailing throughout my years at school. It was during August in 2003 after I took a yacht from Carlingford to Marbella that I thought of joining the Merchant Navy.
When I returned home I enquired about the courses in CIT. I had left it too late to apply for Nautical Science course but was told the interviews for the seamanship course were on the next day.
So I went down to CIT the next morning and got accepted on to the Seamanship course.
After 2 months in college I was sent to sea for 9 months sea time. For my first trip at sea I was sent onboard the Granuaile and after this I was sent to Arklow Shipping were I finished the rest of my sea time for my OOW, during this time I sailed as cadet and worked onboard learning all aspects of the job from the bottom up and gained crucial knowledge and experience. Altogether I had to do 21 months onboard various ships with a college phase in between.
When I went back to college for my OOW in 2007 Arklow Shipping sponsored me for the college phase.
After achieving my OOW certificate I went onboard the Arklow Rock as OOW.
After 6 months sea time I went back to college to get a Chief Officer up to 3000gt certificate which was sponsored by Arklow Shipping. At the age of 22 I was promoted to Chief Officer and returned to the Arklow Rock.
In February 2009 when I had the sufficient sea time I went back to the NMCI to complete the Chief Mate Unlimited course which was also sponsored by Arklow Shipping. I achieved this ticket in February 2010 and joined the 14009dwt Arklow Manor as Chief Mate.
In November 2011 I had obtained the required sea time to sit my Master Unlimited orals.
Having passed the orals I was promoted to Master onboard the 14009dwt Arklow Marsh in December 2011.
At the age of 26 I am currently the youngest Captain in the Arklow Shipping fleet.

In 2001, after completion of the Maritime College in Golynia, I went to sea. From this time I started to work for Arklow Shipping as Ordinary Seaman. After a few years I decided to return to college and complete my education. Arklow Shipping sponsored my college and employed me as Second Officer. I sailed on various Ships within the Arklow Fleet, which gave me valuable experience. In 2008 I attended my Chief Officer course and after College I was promoted to Chief Officer Rank on “W” Class vessels.
I completed almost three years sea service as Chief Officer on Arklow Vessels and then in 2010 I returned to college to complete my Master Mariner ticket, I was then promoted to Master Rank on the M.V Arklow Wind. I am working regularly as Master on Arklow Vessels.

Capt. A. Mulcahy
Having come from a sailing background I decided to go to sea in 1993 at
the age of 24. I chose CIT’s seamanship course which entailed two
months in college before going to sea. Most of my training was carried
out on Arklow Shipping vessels who sponsored me for my college phases
and enabled me to continue my training once the course had finished.
Having completed the initial two months in CIT I then
spent the next 2_ years as a trainee on Arklow ships. During this time
I sailed on various ships which gave me greater experience there were
also a number of college phases to complete and various small courses.
Having received my first watchkeeping certificate
in 1996 I joined the Arklow Bridge as second officer. I was promoted to
Chief Officer after just seven weeks and sailed on bulk carriers as Chief
Officer for a further year and a half.
In 2000 having obtained sufficient seatime I returned to CIT to complete
Masters written exams. In July 2002 I received by Masters certificate
and returned to Arklow Shipping to take up my first command the Arklow
Marsh.

Capt. W. Mates
After growing up around boats and working for
a time in a boatyard in my home town of Arklow, I decided in January of
1983 to apply to Arklow Shipping for a job as a seaman and can safely
say that I have not looked back since.
A job more varied or interesting I believe would be very hard to find
anywhere today.
Like people in all walks of life I spent the first few years learning
the basics of the profession I had chosen. With encouragement and support
from both Captains and Officers I had sailed with, my wife and family
at home and the company I worked for, Arklow Shipping Limited, I progressed
from being an ordinary seaman to deck officer, and later to Captain.
Today I have the pleasure of being Captain of the ARKLOW FREEDOM. A ship
of 5290 tonnes displacement, and the ability to carry around 4100t of
cargo.
After leaving school with very little in the way of formal qualifications,
having just scraped through the Inter Cert, I can say that I definitely
made the right choice with regards to my life and work.
Even after twenty years, there is still no way that I can see myself
doing anything but being a seaman and while the job has changed drastically
in recent years with the advent of bigger, faster ships and quicker turnaround
times in port, it is still very interesting and rewarding work.
For me, I know that I could never work in any other industry and even
the thoughts of a standard 9 to 5 job is enough to make me realise how
much I really enjoy what I do for a living.

Chief Engineer N. Kowalewski
After finishing my college course of Second Engineer I joined Arklow Shipping in January 2008 as Third Engineer in order to gain my sea time on vessels above 3000kw. Arklow Shipping created the position of Third Engineer for me, as at the time there were no ranks for E.OOW.
During this time I served on the Arklow Wind and Arklow Wave. After completing the required sea time I was promoted to Second Engineer in that September on the W Class vessels and later went to the new builds under construction in Korea – The “M” Class.
In 2010 with further support from the company I obtained Chief Engineer qualification and have been sailing as Chief Engineer since May 2010.
Arklow Shipping keeps developing and has a new build program, which gives the opportunity for seamen to educate themselves further. They provide stability as well as permanent employment. I recommend this company.
